BRITTANYS
The Brittany (or Brittany Spaniel as it is known in all parts of the world except the Unites States) was developed in France around the
1850’s by crossing land spaniels with setters in the Bretagne region of France, and derived its name from that area of France.  The first
Brittanys were brought to North America in 1928.  The Brittany is a gentle, devoted companion with personality and energy to burn.  The
history of working at man’s side in the field has made the Brittany very much a “people dog.”  While most enjoy being the family pet Monday
through Friday, they really look forward to Saturday when they become the hunter’s companion.  Even though Brittanys make wonderful pets,
it must be clearly understood that the Brittany is primarily a hunting dog.  The desire and ability to hunt is what makes a Brittany unique.
There are in excess of 400 Dual Champions (bench and field) in this breed, far more than any other AKC breed.  There are few limits to what
the breed can be trained to do.  While a crackerjack obedience dog, it is the breed’s natural hunting ability that sells him to the hunter.  The
Brittany always seems to know just that much more than the hunter himself.  Once trained the Brittany does not forget.

Size
The Brittany is a compact, closely knit dog of medium size.  Britts are leggy dogs having the appearance, as well as the agility, of a great
ground coverer.  They are strong, vigorous, energetic, quick of movement, and rugged without clumsiness.  A Britt can be tailless, or sport a
tail docked to approximately four inches.  A Brittany measures 17 ½ to 20 ½ inches from the ground to the highest point of the shoulders,
and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds, although 50-pound dogs are not uncommon.

Color
Brittanys may be orange and white, liver and white, or tri-colored in either clear or roan patterns. Some ticking is desirable.
